Buxton is a historic village on the East Coast of Demerara, Guyana, about 16 km from Georgetown. Founded in the 19th century by freed slaves who purchased land after emancipation, it is named after British abolitionist Thomas Fowell Buxton. Buxton has a strong community identity and played a role in Guyana's independence movement. The population is predominantly Afro-Guyanese. The economy relies on agriculture, fishing, and small-scale commerce. The village has a primary school, secondary school, health centre, and several churches. Architecture features colorful wooden houses and modern structures. Flooding is a risk; a sea defense system of dykes features protection. Buxton holds annual cultural festivals celebrating African heritage.
