The relief of the Mansoa mangroves in central coastal Guinea-Bissau is a complex assembly of amphibious landforms. This area is almost entirely governed by the tides of the Mansoa River, leading to a constant reshaping of the riparian zones. The relief consists of a labyrinth of tidal channels, mudflats, and flat islands that become visible only during low tide. The soil composition is characterized by fine, saline clays and organic sediments that form an extremely unstable yet highly productive surface. Mangroves here act as geomorphological architects, using their roots to anchor sediment and thus securing the land against erosion caused by the strong currents of the Mansoa estuary. Behind the immediate tidal area, the relief transitions into flat, artificially diked 'bolonhas' used for rice cultivation. This transition zone is of central importance to the hydrological balance of the Oio region, functioning as a buffer against storm surges. Geologically, this relief represents a recent accumulation area where the boundary between land and sea is renegotiated daily.
