💡 Tips

  • Visit the Paleokastritsa Monastery early in the morning to avoid tour bus crowds and the midday heat; dress modestly.
  • Rent a small motorboat from the main harbor to explore secluded coves, like Paradise Beach, which are only accessible by sea.
  • Parking near the main bays is extremely limited in summer, so arrive early or take the Green Bus from Corfu Town.

Paleokastritsa is widely regarded as one of Corfu's most beautiful spots, located on the island's northwest coast. The village is spread around six distinct bays separated by olive-covered peninsulas and steep cliffs. Its main landmark is the Monastery of Panagia Theotokos, originally established in 1225. The current buildings date mostly from the 18th century and house a small museum with Byzantine icons and whale bones. The exceptionally clear, albeit cool, water makes it a top destination for snorkeling, diving, and boat excursions to nearby sea caves. Visitors are drawn by the dramatic scenery and the proximity to Angelokastro, a 13th-century Byzantine fortress offering commanding views of the Ionian Sea. Local tavernas serve Corfiot specialties such as pastitsada and the unique kumquat liqueur produced on the island. The area is best explored between May and September when the sea temperatures are more inviting. It is located about 25 kilometers from Corfu Town, making it accessible via a well-maintained road through the island's green interior.
