Ouranoupoli is situated at the edge of the Athos peninsula in Halkidiki. The town's dominant landmark is the Prosforiou Tower, a 14th-century Byzantine defensive tower located right by the harbor, which now houses a museum. For most visitors, this is the final secular stop before crossing into the autonomous monastic state of Mount Athos. Since women are prohibited from entering Athos, boat cruises along the western coast of the peninsula are the only way to view the impressive monasteries from a distance. The town has evolved from a small refugee settlement (founded after 1922) into an upscale holiday destination. Surrounding beaches are sandy with shallow waters, well-suited for families. A popular day-trip destination is the Drenia island group, reachable by small boat in minutes, offering turquoise waters reminiscent of the Caribbean. Local taverns serve excellent fresh fish from the Singitic Gulf. The region is also renowned for its forest honey and organic olive oil. The best time to visit is from May to October, with September being particularly pleasant for sightseeing without the peak summer heat. The drive from Thessaloniki takes approximately two hours.
