Monemvasia is an impressive medieval fortress-town perched on a massive rock off the southeastern coast of the Peloponnese. The town was founded in 583 AD by local inhabitants seeking refuge from Slavic and Avar invasions on the mainland. Its name is derived from the Greek words mone and emvasia, meaning 'single entrance,' referring to the narrow causeway that serves as the only link to the mainland. Monemvasia is divided into an Upper Town, which is now largely uninhabited, and a Lower Town where life continues in beautifully restored Byzantine houses. During the Middle Ages, the fortress was a key commercial port, famous for producing and exporting the sweet Malvasia wine across Europe. With its labyrinthine alleys, ancient churches, and panoramic views of the Myrtoan Sea, Monemvasia remains one of the most romantic and historical destinations in all of Greece.
