Monemvasia
Monemvasia, often called the 'Gibraltar of the East', is a striking medieval fortress town located on a massive rock off the coast of the Peloponnese. Its name is derived from 'moni emvasis' (single entrance), as the island is connected to the mainland by only a narrow causeway. The town is divided into the Lower Town and the Upper Town. In the Lower Town, visitors find a labyrinth of cobblestone streets, Byzantine churches, and restored stone houses that now host pleasant cafés and boutique hotels. No cars are allowed inside the castle walls. The Upper Town is mostly uninhabited today but houses the impressive 12th-century Agia Sophia church, which stands right on the edge of the cliff. From here, the views across the Aegean Sea are sweeping. The town was a strategic trading port for centuries, alternating between Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman rule. It was particularly famous in the Middle Ages for Malvasia wine, which was exported across Europe. The fortification walls remain remarkably intact. A visit to Monemvasia feels like stepping back into the Middle Ages. The best time to visit is spring or late autumn when the weather is pleasant for exploring the steep paths. Inside the walls, you will discover hidden gardens and tiny squares. Local cuisine features specialties like 'saitia' (spinach pies) and handmade pasta. The nearby modern settlement of Gefyra on the mainland provides additional amenities and beaches for those looking to combine history with a seaside holiday.
