Chlemoutsi Castle (Greece)

Weather…

Chlemoutsi Castle, also known as Castel Tornese, was constructed between 1220 and 1223 by Prince Geoffrey I d'Villehardouin and represents the most significant fortification of the Principality of Achaea. Perched on a hill near Kyllini in the Elis region, it served as a strategic military center and a primary residence for the Frankish rulers of the Peloponnese. The castle's architecture follows a distinctive hexagonal plan, showcasing Western medieval defensive technology of the 13th century. The inner enclosure housed the princely residence and administrative quarters, while the extensive outer courtyard provided space for the garrison and stables. Following the Frankish era, the fortress came under Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian control, with each administration adding its own structural modifications. Today, the site functions as a museum dedicated to the history of the Crusader states in the Eastern Mediterranean, preserving one of the best examples of Frankish castle architecture in Greece.
