Castle of Monemvasia (Greece)

Weather…

The Castle of Monemvasia is a medieval fortress-city located on a massive rock off the coast of Laconia in the Peloponnese. Often referred to as the 'Gibraltar of the East', it is connected to the mainland only by a narrow causeway. The city was founded in the 6th century and served for centuries as a vital commercial port and strategic base for the Byzantine Empire, the Venetians, and the Ottomans. The architecture is characterized by narrow cobblestone streets, Byzantine churches, and Venetian mansions that have been carefully restored. The upper city houses the impressive 12th-century Agia Sophia church, while the lower city is still inhabited today and features cafes and guesthouses. Monemvasia is a living monument that has almost entirely preserved its medieval atmosphere. The view from the top of the rock over the Aegean Sea is spectacular, making it one of the most romantic destinations in Greece.
