Fort San Sebastian (Ghana)

Weather…

Fort San Sebastian in Shama is the third-oldest European structure in Ghana, with its origins dating back to 1526. It was initially established by the Portuguese as a small fortified trading post to secure access to the gold resources along the Pra River. The Dutch West India Company captured the fort in 1640 and significantly expanded it into the massive defensive complex that remains visible today, characterized by its bright white walls. Throughout the colonial period, it functioned as a vital center for the trade of gold, ivory, and enslaved persons. Historically, the fort is also known as the final resting place of Anton Wilhelm Amo, the first African to earn a PhD and teach at German universities, who was buried here in 1740. Ceded to the British in 1872, the fort is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Remarkably well-preserved, it currently houses administrative offices and a post office, while continuing to serve as a significant historical site for researchers and tourists interested in West African colonial history.
