Fort Metal Cross (Ghana)

Weather…

Fort Metal Cross, located in the coastal town of Dixcove, is a historic fortification established by the British in 1683. Originally named Fort Metalen Kruis, it was built to facilitate and protect British interests in the trade of gold and timber within the region. Situated on a prominent hill overlooking the Dixcove bay, the fort provided a strategic defensive position against rival European powers, most notably the Dutch, and local incursions. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the fort underwent several expansions and was central to the colonial administration in the Western Region. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site under the 'Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions' category. Today, the fort remains well-preserved, featuring impressive bastions, dungeons, and cannons that recall its complex past in the transatlantic trade. Its high walls offer a sweeping view of the Atlantic Ocean and the traditional fishing community of Dixcove below.
