Fort Gross-Friedrichsburg is a historical fortress located in Princes Town in the Western Region of Ghana and holds a unique place in the country's colonial history. It was built in 1683 by the Brandenburg African Company under the Great Elector Frederick William. This makes it the only Brandenburg-Prussian fortress on the Gold Coast. The fort was strategically built on a hill to secure trade in gold, ivory, and later enslaved people. The structure is built in the baroque fortress style and features distinctive bastions. However, the Prussian presence was short-lived; in 1721, the fort was sold to the Dutch. Today, the ruins and partially restored parts of the fortress are a significant destination for history enthusiasts and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. The fort commemorates the global ambitions of German states in the 17th century and features a sweeping view of the surrounding coastline and the village of Princes Town.

The fort is open to visitors year-round; the well-preserved walls and bastions can be freely explored. Inside, there are small exhibition rooms on Brandenburg colonial history.

Usual opening hours are from 9 AM to 5 PM, with a lunch break for the caretaker. Access may be limited on public holidays - it's wise to call ahead.

Photography is allowed throughout the site. For interior shots, natural daylight coming through window openings is sufficient without extra lighting.

Exploring the fort takes about one hour. Those who also visit the nearby beach and fishing villages should allow two hours.

Getting there
The fort is located near the town of Akwidaa in western Ghana, about four hours' drive from Accra. The last few kilometers are on an unpaved road but passable with a regular car.
