Fort Batenstein (Ghana)

Weather…

Fort Batenstein, situated in the village of Butre, is the historic ruin of a Dutch fortification established in 1656. The fort was constructed on a strategic hilltop overlooking the mouth of the Butre River to protect the Dutch West India Company's interests in the lucrative gold trade. It is historically significant as the site of the Treaty of Butre signed in 1656, which established a protectorate and commercial alliance between the Dutch and the local Ahanta people that lasted for over two centuries. Although smaller than other forts on the Gold Coast, its defensive position was vital for resisting incursions from English and Swedish competitors. In 1872, the fort was ceded to the British under the terms of the Treaty of Sumatra, but it eventually fell into disrepair. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the remains of its bastions and walls offer a glimpse into the colonial past amidst a serene natural setting. The site provides a commanding view of the Butre lagoon and the surrounding tropical landscape.
