The Bobiri Butterfly Sanctuary is located within the Bobiri Forest Reserve near Kubease, approximately 30 kilometers southeast of Kumasi. Designated as a forest reserve in 1939, it is currently the only butterfly sanctuary in West Africa. Spanning about 54 square kilometers, the reserve is home to over 400 different butterfly species, which are most abundant during the rainy seasons between April and June, and October and November. The area consists of primary tropical rainforest featuring monumental trees, some over 300 years old. In addition to butterflies, the reserve provides habitat for numerous bird species and rare orchids. It serves as a vital research center for entomologists and features visitors educational trails focused on rainforest ecology. The sanctuary promotes ecotourism and awareness for the protection of endangered insect species. Controlled access ensures the integrity of this fragile ecosystem while providing educational programs for schools.
