Situated along the inner Lübeck Bay on the Baltic Sea coast, Neustadt in Holstein is a harbor town steeped in maritime tradition. Founded in 1244, the town's historical significance is evidenced by the Kremper Tor, the last surviving medieval city gate, which today houses the "Zeittor" local history museum. The fjord-like harbor extends deep into the town center, combining traditional fishing boats and old grain silos with the five-star Ancora Marina, one of the largest private yacht harbors in the Baltic Sea. The central market square is dominated by the town church, a commanding brick structure. A dark chapter of maritime history is memorialized at the Cap Arcona monument on Pelzerhaken beach, honoring the victims of the prisoner ships sunk just days before the end of the Second World War. The southern districts of Pelzerhaken and Rettin feature fine-sand, south-facing beaches with shallow waters, making them highly popular among families, windsurfers, and stand-up paddleboarders. Wide promenades and direct access to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route provide effortless ways to explore the extensive coastline.
