Picturesquely situated on the banks of the Elbe River, Wedel is an absolute must-visit for anyone who loves ships and maritime flair. The undisputed highlight of the town is the world-famous Willkomm-Höft ship greeting station at the ferry house. Since 1952, ocean liners arriving at or departing from the Port of Hamburg have been solemnly welcomed here with their national anthem and a greeting in their native language. It is a true goosebump moment, best enjoyed from the waterfront terrace with a traditional fresh fish sandwich in hand. Another maritime highlight is the Hamburger Yachthafen in Wedel, which is the largest tidal marina for pleasure boats in all of Northern Germany, offering a magnificent backdrop with its forest of white masts. But Wedel has even more to offer: in the historic market square, the stone Roland statue stands guard, serving as a centuries-old symbol of market rights and civic freedom. Those seeking nature can take extended walks or bike rides through the green Wedeler Marsch, a bird sanctuary of international importance. Wedel also marks the starting point of the historic Ochsenweg, an ancient trade route extending to Denmark.
