Ilsenburg is positioned directly on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains, exactly where the deeply carved Ilse Valley (Ilsetal) opens into the rugged terrain. The town is highly regarded among hikers as the starting point for the Heinrich Heine Trail (Heinrich-Heine-Weg), one of the most natural and demanding routes leading up to the 1,141-meter Brocken summit. In the 19th century, the famous poet himself was deeply inspired by the steep granite cliffs and the cascading waters of the Ilse river. In the center of town, the former Benedictine monastery founded in the 11th century preserves medieval architectural elements, most notably its original Romanesque plaster floor. Alongside its monastic history, the settlement maintained a booming iron smelting industry for centuries, the technical remains of which can still be traced near the old copper works. Following a grueling hike through the dense forests of the Harz National Park, the traditional wooden mountain houses clustered around the Trout Pond (Forellenteich) provide a quiet, atmospheric retreat.
