Merseburg is one of the oldest cities in Central Germany, boasting a history that spans over a millennium. Situated on the Saale River, it served as a significant royal palace under the Ottonian dynasty and later became the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Merseburg. The architectural masterpiece of the city is the prominent ensemble of Merseburg Cathedral and the adjacent Renaissance castle, perched majestically on a rocky outcrop above the river. The city achieved global fame following the discovery of the Merseburg Incantations in the cathedral library, which are among the earliest recorded examples of Germanic mythology in Old High German. During the 20th century, the region evolved into a hub for the chemical industry (the Leuna works), a factor that continues to shape the local economy. Today, as a university city, Merseburg bridges historical tradition with modern research. Its scenic location along the 'Romanesque Road' and the lush Saale wetlands make it a cultural and touristic anchor in Saxony-Anhalt.
