Ochtrup is located in the northwestern corner of Münsterland in North Rhine-Westphalia, near the Dutch border. The town is historically defined by two major industries: pottery and textiles. Pottery has been a staple of the local economy since the 1500s, famously producing the 'Ochtrup Nightingale,' a unique clay whistle. During the industrial era, Ochtrup rose to prominence as a center for cotton production, led by the Laurenz family, whose massive factory complexes still dominate the skyline with their impressive brick architecture. Following the decline of the European textile industry, the town underwent a successful structural transformation. The former industrial sites were converted into a sprawling Designer Outlet Center, which is now a major regional tourism and retail magnet. Beyond shopping, Ochtrup features a quintessential Westphalian landscape, characterized by flat terrain and hedgerows, making it a popular destination for cycling enthusiasts. The town's historical heritage is preserved in sites like the Villa Winkel and the Pottery Museum.
