Steinfurt is an appealing administrative center in the Münsterland region, formed in 1975 by the merger of the historically distinct towns of Burgsteinfurt and Borghorst. Burgsteinfurt is dominated by its magnificent moated castle, still owned by the Princely House of Bentheim-Steinfurt, and its easy on the eye old town filled with half-timbered houses. In contrast, Borghorst grew through its textile industry, a legacy that paved the way for modern industrial growth in the district. The city is a key educational hub, hosting a large campus of the Münster University of Applied Sciences, specializing in engineering and technology. One of its greatest treasures is the Bagno Park, one of the earliest English landscape gardens in Germany, featuring a restored 18th-century concert gallery. Steinfurt's economy is now driven by medium-sized enterprises in mechanical engineering, plastics, and high-tech manufacturing, blending tradition with progress.
