As the oldest town in the County of Bentheim, Schüttorf is home to a deeply rooted history that stretches back to the thirteenth century. The undisputed landmark of the municipality is the "Schüttorfer Riese", the eighty-one-meter-high tower of the Reformed Church of St. Laurentius, which dominates the surrounding landscape and historically served as a crucial orientation point. The historic old town is characterized by robust buildings constructed from local Bentheim sandstone, notably including the historic town hall and the old pharmacy. During the nineteenth century, the town developed into a major center for the textile industry, leaving behind an architectural legacy of elegant factory owners residences. The Vechte river flows directly through the urban area, and the accompanying Vechtetalroute cycle path provides excellent conditions for extended biking tours along the water. Situated near the Dutch border, it gives visitors a harmonious blend of industrial heritage, medieval architecture, and tranquil riverine nature.
