Bad Bentheim is a historic town located in the district of Grafschaft Bentheim in Lower Saxony, bordering both North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands. The town's definitive landmark is the Castle of Bentheim, a formidable hilltop fortress built from local sandstone. Dating back to at least 1050, it remains one of the largest and best-preserved castles in Northwest Germany and is still owned by the Princely House of Bentheim-Steinfurt. The region is famous for 'Bentheim Sandstone,' often referred to as 'Bentheim Gold,' which was a major export in the Middle Ages and used in the construction of prominent buildings like the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. Since the discovery of sulfur springs in 1711, the town has developed into a premier health resort, officially gaining the title 'Bad' (spa) in 1979. Today, visitors enjoy the thermal brine baths, the expansive Bentheim Forest, and the easy on the eye old town. Its strategic location on the main railway line between Berlin and Amsterdam makes it a popular stop for international travelers and a bustling center for regional culture and tourism.
