Espelkamp, located in the Minden-Lübbecke district, is a city with an extraordinary history of origin, inseparably linked to the aftermath of World War II. The urban area was developed starting in 1949 on the grounds of the former Mittwald army ammunition plant, where existing halls and bunkers were repurposed as initial housing and workplaces for refugees and displaced persons. This transformation from a site of destruction into a spirited community is regarded as a prime example of successful post-war urban planning. Today, Espelkamp is a modern economic hub, primarily characterized by the vending machine industry and electrical engineering. The city's structure is defined by extensive green belts that break up the built-up areas and provide a high quality of life. Culturally, Espelkamp has gained a reputation far beyond its borders through the Neues Theater and various museums, including the German Coin-Op Museum.
