Bottrop is a major city in the Ruhr area of North Rhine-Westphalia, known for its deep roots in hard coal mining. Until the closure of the Prosper-Haniel colliery in 2018, the city was an active center of coal mining and has since undergone intensive structural change. A landmark visible from afar is the Tetraeder, a monumental accessible steel construction on a former slag heap, erected in 1995 as part of the IBA Emscher Park. Culturally, the city has a significant art collection with the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat, dedicated to the painter and art theorist born in Bottrop. Economically, Bottrop has developed into a location for services and tourism today, with the Movie Park Germany theme park in the Kirchhellen district holding supra-regional importance. The city is also located on the edge of the Hohe Mark Nature Park, which gives it a high proportion of green space.
