Located in the heart of the East Westphalian countryside along the Else river, Bünde is an appealing town that gained worldwide fame as the Cigar City. Until the mid-20th century, the local economy revolved entirely around tobacco processing, a legacy kept alive in the fascinating German Tobacco and Cigar Museum, where visitors can marvel at the world's largest walk-in cigar box. The historical center surrounding the venerable St. Lawrence Church, with its cozy squares and richly decorated half-timbered facades, invites visitors for a relaxing stroll. Nature lovers and sports enthusiasts are drawn to the banks of the Else river, whose flat and easy on the eye floodplain gives well-suited conditions for extended cycling tours along the popular Else-Werre cycle path. The Museum Island complex, which includes the Doberg Museum alongside the tobacco exhibits, showcases sensational paleontological finds from the region, including fossilized sea cows and whales dating back millions of years. Culinarily, the town has much to offer; numerous small cafes and traditional taverns serve regional Westphalian specialties, providing welcome energy after an eventful day of exploration and discovery.
