Grabow is often referred to as the "Colorful City on the Elde" due to its almost entirely preserved historical old town. Following a devastating city fire in 1725, the center was systematically rebuilt, creating a cohesive ensemble of hundreds of Northern German half-timbered houses with brightly colored facades and ornately carved front doors. The centerpiece is the market square featuring the baroque half-timbered town hall from 1727, which rests on a massive fieldstone foundation. The town is nationally famous for its confectionery industry: the airy chocolate-coated marshmallows ("Grabower Küsschen") have been produced here for decades and are a firm part of the local identity. Situated on the Müritz-Elde waterway, the town gives a marina and an easy on the eye river promenade for walkers and boaters. In the narrow alleys, visitors can discover traditional craft workshops and regional cafes far away from mass tourism.
