Wolgast is located on the western bank of the Peenestrom in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and forms the strategic entrance to the popular holiday island of Usedom. The town looks back on a glorious era as the residence of the Pomeranian Dukes from the 13th to the 17th century, although the former ducal castle on Castle Island no longer exists today. Nevertheless, the massive St. Peter's Church with the ducal crypt and the historic town hall testify to its former significance. A modern landmark is the blue-lit Peene Bridge, a combined road and railway bascule bridge. Economically, Wolgast has been defined by shipbuilding for generations, with the Peene Shipyard serving as a central employer in the region. Art enthusiasts know the town as the birthplace of Philipp Otto Runge, one of the most important painters of German Romanticism. The historic old town with its renovated gabled houses invites visitors to enjoy the maritime atmosphere away from the major island tourism.
