Neustrelitz, located in the heart of the Mecklenburg Small Lake District, is an outstanding example of a planned baroque city. Duke Adolf Friedrich III had the residential town built in the 18th century with a distinctive star-shaped layout, featuring eight streets radiating outward from the central market square. A stroll through the historic town center inevitably leads to the grand ducal palace grounds. Although the main palace was destroyed in 1945, the extensive, terraced palace park, with its classical sculptures, the Hebe temple, and the neo-Gothic palace church, still impresses every visitor today. Culturally, the town has an excellent reputation thanks to the State Theater of Neustrelitz, which regularly stages high-quality dramatic and musical performances. At the scenic town harbor on Lake Zierker, travelers can relax or dine in one of the local restaurants before setting off on a boat tour through the surrounding network of waterways. Families and history fans also highly appreciate the Slavic Village on the lakeshore, where medieval craftsmanship and lifestyles are brought to life. The unique architecture combined with the close proximity to the Müritz National Park makes the town a fascinating destination for both architecture lovers and nature enthusiasts.
