Dannenberg (Elbe) is the cultural and economic center of the Elbtalaue collective municipality in the Lower Saxon district of Lüchow-Dannenberg. The town has a fortified past, its most visible sign being the Waldemar Tower, the last remaining part of the former Dannenberg Castle, where the Danish King Waldemar II was held captive. The old town is characterized by lovingly restored half-timbered houses and the historic town hall. Geographically, Dannenberg is situated in a landscape rich in water, where the Jeetzel River flows toward the Elbe. Nationally, the town gained fame in connection with the 'Castor' nuclear waste shipments to the nearby Gorleben storage facility, which often made Dannenberg the site of peaceful protests. Today, the town presents itself as a sustainable living space with a high quality of life, embedded in the UNESCO Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve of Lower Saxony, offering unique natural experiences for hikers, cyclists, and birdwatchers.
