Lübz is situated on both banks of the Müritz-Elde waterway and is best known among connoisseurs as a brewing location. The nationally popular Lübzer Pils has been brewed here since 1877 and is deeply rooted in the town's economic history. The historical landmark of the town, however, is the Amtsturm (Office Tower), a massive remnant of the late medieval Eldenburg Castle dating back to the 14th century. Today, the tower houses a local history museum and features a panoramic view from the top over the compact town center and the course of the river. Next to the half-timbered houses of the old town lies a decommissioned water mill with its wheel still visible, as well as a small, modernized lock system for recreational captains cruising the Elde. An unexpected highlight is the planetarium, housed in a former water tower, offering astronomical shows. Surrounded by meadows and forests, the town often serves as a starting point for houseboat tours into the Mecklenburg Lake District.
