Bad Arolsen is a characterful Baroque town in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in northern Hesse. It was designed in the 18th century as a planned city modeled after Versailles to serve as the residence of the Princes of Waldeck-Pyrmont. The dominant structure is the Arolsen Residence Castle, a magnificent Baroque building erected between 1710 and 1811, which is still owned by the princely family today; parts of it are open to the public. Bad Arolsen also gained worldwide significance as the home of the Arolsen Archives (formerly the International Tracing Service), which house the world's most comprehensive documentation on the victims of Nazi persecution and are part of UNESCO's Memory of the World heritage. Geographically, the city is surrounded by a forested low mountain landscape and is located near Lake Twistesee, a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts and hikers. Since 1977, the town has held the title 'Bad', indicating its importance as a spa and health resort. Culturally, Bad Arolsen provides a high-caliber musical event with the Arolsen Baroque Festival.
