Waldeck is located in northern Hesse and is inextricably linked to Lake Edersee, one of Germany's largest reservoirs. The town's districts extend from the ridges above the lake down to the shore. Its all-dominating landmark is Waldeck Castle, a 12th-century medieval fortress that now serves as a hotel and museum, offering spectacular views of the lake. For centuries, Waldeck was the power center of the Counts and later Princes of Waldeck, giving the town rich historical significance. Its immediate proximity to the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, makes the town a magnet for nature lovers, hikers, and water sports enthusiasts. The infrastructure is heavily geared towards tourism, featuring mountain railways, boat lines, and numerous leisure facilities. Despite its tourist importance, Waldeck has managed to preserve its rural and historic charm in its various districts, such as the state-recognized climatic health resort of Waldeck itself.
