Marsberg is located in the northeastern part of the Hochsauerland district, right at the border with Hesse, uniquely positioned in the Diemel River valley. The town's significance dates back to the 8th century during the Saxon Wars of Charlemagne. The hilltop district of Obermarsberg occupies the site of the ancient Eresburg fortress, where Charlemagne is said to have destroyed the Irminsul, a sacred Saxon pillar, in 772 AD. This event marked a turning point in the Christianization of Northern Germany. For centuries, Marsberg was also a prominent copper mining center. The Kilianstollen visitor mine provides an in-depth look into this subterranean heritage that shaped the town's prosperity. During the industrial era, Marsberg diversified into glass making, paper production, and metalworking, industries that still contribute to its economy today. Located within the Diemelsee Nature Park, the town features a high quality of life with access to extensive forests and hiking trails. It is also an important regional healthcare hub, hosting several large specialized hospitals. The mix of deep historical roots, industrial heritage, and natural beauty makes Marsberg a distinctive destination in the Sauerland region.
