Festival celebrating the city's Hanseatic heritage in early May on the Neustadtmarkt square, with a medieval market, live music and family entertainment.
Often referred to as the Rothenburg of Westphalia, the Hanseatic city of Warburg is a remarkably preserved medieval town situated in the green Diemel valley. Approaching the city limits, visitors are struck by its historic skyline, featuring ancient defense towers, massive stone gates, and the tall steeples of its churches. The almost fully intact town wall encloses a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets, traditional half-timbered houses, and an expansive market square that transports you back in time. Just outside the city rises the Desenberg, a striking conical volcanic hill crowned by the ruins of a medieval castle; climbing to its summit rewards hikers with expansive views over the surrounding Warburger Börde landscape. Culturally, the town comes alive with events such as the traditional October week festival, which celebrates local heritage with regional specialties like the local Warburger beer. The area is also a fantastic starting point for cycling tours along the Diemel cycle path, offering a combination of architectural history and tranquil nature, making Warburg a fulfilling day trip destination.
