Zierenberg was founded as a planned town in 1293 by Landgrave Henry I of Hesse, strategically placed to protect the regional borders. This medieval heritage is still visible in the town's layout and its collection of historic half-timbered buildings. The crown jewel of its architecture is the Town Hall, built in 1450, which stands as the oldest building of its kind in Hesse still serving its original purpose. The town church is another historical site of note, featuring remarkable 14th-century murals that were hidden for centuries. Geographically, Zierenberg is located at the foot of the Dörnberg, a massive basalt formation that is part of the Habichtswald Nature Park. The area is a magnet for hikers, paragliders, and glider pilots, owing to the exceptional thermal conditions of the volcanic landscape. Zierenberg successfully balances its role as a quiet, historic residential town with its function as a regional gateway for ecological tourism.
