Großräschen is located in Lower Lusatia, Brandenburg, and stands as a prime example of structural transformation in East Germany. For decades, the town’s identity was forged by open-cast lignite mining, providing employment while significantly altering the natural environment. Following the cessation of mining, the former Meuro pit was flooded to create Lake Großräschen. Today, the town is a key component of the Lusatian Lake District, Europe's largest man-made water landscape. An architectural highlight is the IBA Terraces, designed during the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Fürst-Pückler-Land, which now serve as a visitor center and viewpoint. The town has successfully rebranded itself as a harbor city, featuring a lake bridge and modern marinas. While maintaining its mining heritage through local monuments and museums, Großräschen has invested heavily in tourism infrastructure for cyclists and water sports enthusiasts, blending industrial history with modern lakeside living.
