Lauta is located in the northern Bautzen district, right on the border between Saxony and Brandenburg. The town's identity was forged during the early 20th century by the massive Lautawerk aluminum smelter, which was crucial to the German economy during both World Wars. To accommodate the workforce, the Erika garden city (Lauta-Nord) was established starting in 1918. Designed by architect Clemens Klotz, it remains one of the best-preserved examples of industrial garden city planning in Germany and is a listed historical site. Following the decline of heavy industry in the 1990s, Lauta has successfully transitioned into a residential town within the emerging Lusatian Lake District. The transformation of former open-cast lignite mines into a vast network of lakes has brought new life to the region, with the nearby Lake Senftenberg being a major draw. Today, Lauta emphasizes sustainable development and heritage tourism, inviting visitors to explore its unique blend of industrial history and modern outdoor recreation in the surrounding countryside.
