Schwarzheide is a prime example of a town whose destiny is closely intertwined with the chemical industry. The town was formed in its current version only in 1967 through the merger of Schwarzheide-West (formerly Zschornegosda) and Schwarzheide-Ost (formerly Naundorf). The heart of the town is the BASF plant, which emerged from the former Schwarzheide synthesis plant and now employs thousands of people. Despite its industrial focus, Schwarzheide features a high quality of life with modern residential areas and plenty of green spaces. Nearby lies the Lusatian Lake District, created from former open-cast mines, providing diverse leisure opportunities. BASF is also a major cultural patron in the town, organizing concerts and exhibitions in the local cultural center. The town is conveniently located on the A13 motorway, making it an attractive site for logistics and industry.
