Fürstenwalde/Spree is a historic city in Brandenburg, located roughly halfway between Berlin and Frankfurt (Oder). Founded in the 13th century, it rose to prominence as the seat of the Bishops of Lebus, which led to the construction of the impressive St. Mary's Cathedral. Although the cathedral was severely damaged in 1945, its reconstruction remains a symbol of the city's resilience. The industrial era transformed Fürstenwalde into a manufacturing hub, particularly for metalworking and chemical industries, supported by the development of the Oder-Spree Canal. Geographically, the city is blessed with diverse landscapes, from the flowing Spree river to the nearby Rauener Hills, home to the famous 'Markgrafensteine' giant boulders. Today, Fürstenwalde is a thriving regional center with a growing population, partly due to its excellent rail connection to Berlin and its strategic role in the 'Berlin-Brandenburg' growth region. It gives a rich cultural life, including jazz festivals and a historical museum showcasing its brewing and industrial past.
