Stone Bridge Regensburg (Germany)

Weather…

The Stone Bridge in Regensburg is considered a masterpiece of medieval engineering and is the oldest preserved stone bridge in Germany. Built between 1135 and 1146, it spans the Danube River with originally sixteen arches and was for centuries the only permanent crossing between Ulm and Vienna. This strategic location helped Regensburg achieve considerable prosperity through long-distance trade between Northern Europe and Venice. The bridge is approximately 310 meters long and forms the centerpiece of the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town. According to a famous legend, the bridge builder made a pact with the devil to complete the structure faster than the Regensburg Cathedral was being built. Today, the bridge is a pedestrian zone and provides a striking view of the cathedral and the historic salt warehouse. Between 2010 and 2018, the structure underwent extensive renovation to permanently secure its historical substance.
