Starnberg is world-famous as the gateway to the Five Lakes District and as one of the wealthiest places in Germany. The city is picturesquely situated on the northern shore of Lake Starnberg, only about 25 kilometers southwest of Munich. Historically, Starnberg developed from a fishing village into a sought-after summer resort for Munich society in the 19th century. The city's architecture is characterized by magnificent villas and Starnberg Castle, which now houses the tax office. The lakeside promenade invites strolling, while the ships of the Bavarian lake fleet enable excursions across the lake. Economically, the city is an important service location but benefits primarily from its position as an exclusive residential community. Proximity to the Alps and diverse water sports opportunities make Starnberg a center for high-end leisure.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
