Geretsried stands out as a unique urban development in Upper Bavaria, lacking the centuries-old traditional center found in neighboring towns. Its history effectively began in the aftermath of World War II, as the town was built upon the infrastructure of two massive hidden munitions factories. Following the war, these derelict industrial sites provided shelter for thousands of ethnic German refugees and displaced persons from Eastern Europe. Through immense collective effort, this makeshift settlement evolved into a thriving industrial hub, achieving municipal independence in 1950 and city status in 1970. Today, it is the largest city in the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district and a vital economic driver for the region. Set between the Isar and Loisach rivers, Geretsried gives a high quality of life with its proximity to the Alps and the Munich metropolitan area, characterized by its modern layout and dynamic, diverse population.
