Donaumoos (Germany)

Weather…

The Donaumoos is a large fen and bog area in Bavaria, Germany, extending along the Danube River in the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district. Covering about 180 square kilometers, it formed after the last ice age roughly 10,000 years ago through the siltation of a former Danube branch. Peat depths reach up to 6 meters in some places. In the 19th century, systematic drainage began for agricultural use, but today the area is a vital carbon sink and flood retention zone. The Donaumoos is designated as a Natura 2000 site and hosts rare bird species such as the Eurasian curlew and black-tailed godwit. The landscape features wet meadows, reed beds, and scattered pine trees. The nearby Limes Germanicus, a UNESCO World Heritage site, runs along its edge.
