Alzenau, located in the Lower Franconian district of Aschaffenburg, is Bavaria's northernmost wine town. The town is beautifully situated in the Kahlgrund on the western edge of the Spessart mountains. Its most prominent landmark is Alzenau Castle, a late Gothic fortress from the 14th century that now serves as a cultural hub for concerts and open-air theater. Historically, Alzenau was long disputed between the Archbishopric of Mainz and the Counts of Hanau, a conflict that shaped its local history. Today, the town is a modern economic center with a high quality of life, benefiting from its proximity to the Frankfurt metropolitan area. A unique feature is the viticulture at Alzenauer Steinberg, which is part of the Franconian wine region. The town's districts vary from urban atmospheres in the center to nature-oriented villages in the Kahlgrund. For outdoor enthusiasts, Alzenau provides numerous hiking and cycling trails through the Spessart and along the Kahl River. The "Energy Park," formerly the site of the 2015 Bavarian State Garden Show, is now a popular recreational spot for families.
