Kodori Gorge (Georgia)

Weather…

The Kodori Gorge is a narrow river valley located in Abkhazia, an autonomous republic in northwestern Georgia. It is carved by the Kodori River, which is fed by the glaciers of the Greater Caucasus. Geographically, the gorge is divided into the Upper and Lower Kodori Valley, with the upper section reaching elevations of up to 1,300 meters. The landscape is characterized by rugged cliffs, deep ravines, and dense coniferous and mixed forests that host immense biodiversity. Historically, the valley served as a strategically vital passage across the main Caucasus ridge. Until the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, the Upper Kodori Valley was the only part of Abkhazia remaining under the control of the central Georgian government. The population primarily consisted of Svans, a Georgian ethnic subgroup with their own distinct language and culture. Currently, access to the gorge is heavily restricted due to political sensitivities, which has left its natural environment largely pristine.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Traveling to this remote and politically sensitive area generally requires special permits and local accompaniment from Sukhumi. The roads into the deeply cut river valley are often unpaved and difficult to navigate.
📅
Best season
The summer months from June to September offer the most stable weather conditions for traveling through the valley. In winter, heavy snowfalls and landslides often make the region inaccessible for weeks.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is extremely rugged, characterized by deep gorges, dense forests, and steep mountain slopes. The terrain off the main routes requires alpine experience and orientation skills in untouched nature.
🎒
What to bring
Complete, self-sufficient trekking gear including a tent, sleeping bag, and emergency communication is indispensable due to the lack of infrastructure. Very robust footwear, warm clothing, and sufficient provisions must be brought.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles are typically securely parked at organized meeting points in the starting towns or at the beginning of the passable roads. In the valley itself, there are no regular parking spaces, only rough terrain.
⚠️
Safety
The political situation and possible border conflicts require a thorough prior check of the security situation. Never travel without professional local guides who know the paths and current dangers.
⏱️
Time needed
An expedition through the gorge system is an undertaking of at least 3 to 5 days. Due to the difficult accessibility, a short day trip is hardly reasonable or feasible.
