Gagra
Gagra is one of the most famous coastal resort towns in the Caucasus, set between the Black Sea and the towering Gagra Range. Historically known as the 'Russian Riviera', it gives a unique blend of subtropical climate, memorable mountain scenery, and historical architecture. Visitors come here to relax on the long pebbly beaches, swim in the warm sea, and explore the lush parks filled with palm trees and eucalyptus. Key sights in Gagra include the Colonnade, a striking semi-circular structure on the waterfront, and the ruins of the Abaata Fortress, dating back to the 5th century. The town is divided into Old and New Gagra, with the older part offering quiet, romantic alleys and historical ruins, while the new part bustles with modern cafes, markets, and entertainment. The local cuisine features Caucasian barbecue, fresh seafood, and spicy adjika. The best time to visit Gagra is during the warm summer months from June to September, when the sea is first-rate for swimming. To get there, most travelers cross the border from Sochi (Russia) or travel from other parts of Abkhazia via bus or taxi. It is a well-suited destination for those seeking a mix of seaside relaxation and Soviet-era nostalgia.
