Petit Loango is an ecologically vital protected area on the coast of Gabon, currently managed as an integral part of the Loango National Park. Geographically, it is located south of the Iguela lagoon system and encompasses a fascinating mosaic of lagoons, mangroves, coastal savannas, and dense rainforests. Petit Loango is internationally renowned as one of the most critical nesting sites for Leatherback sea turtles on the African Atlantic coast, which lay their eggs here between November and February. Historically, the area was established as a game reserve in the 1960s before being incorporated into the modern national park system in 2002. The region is a haven for observing forest elephants and buffaloes, which frequently forage in the open grasslands near the shore. Due to strict conservation rules and its remote location, human presence is minimal, making Petit Loango a precious sanctuary for endangered species. Tourism development is restricted to controlled ecotourism projects that prioritize the preservation of this sensitive ecosystem.
