Omboué is a photogenic lagoon town in the Ogooué-Maritime province of western Gabon, situated on the Fernan-Vaz Lagoon. The town is historically significant as the birthplace of long-time President Omar Bongo Ondimba and was once an important mission center for the Spiritans. Geographically, Omboué today serves as the primary gateway to Loango National Park, one of Africa's most spectacular protected areas, where forest elephants are often seen on the beaches. The local economy is driven by ecotourism, artisanal fishing, and to a limited extent, the oil industry in the broader region. The town is accessible only by plane or boat from Port-Gentil, which has preserved its exclusive and quiet atmosphere. Culturally, the region is defined by the Nkomi ethnic group, whose traditions are closely linked to the lagoon landscape. Surrounding historical sites include the Saint-Anne Mission, designed in 1887 by Gustav Eiffel. Omboué remains a symbol of the untouched nature and cultural heritage of the Gabonese coast.
