Mékambo is a remote town in northeastern Gabon, located in the Ogooué-Ivindo Province, and serves as the administrative headquarters of the Zadin Department. The town is situated deep within the rainforest near the Ivindo River and is known for its rich natural surroundings and proximity to the spectacular Zoula Falls. The region gained international notoriety due to outbreaks of the Ebola virus in the 1990s, which placed the town at the center of global medical research. Economically, Mékambo relies heavily on subsistence farming and forestry, yet it holds massive untapped iron ore reserves in the nearby Belinga region. Due to its isolated location, the town has preserved an authentic way of life where traditional hunting and gathering techniques still play a role. Connections to the national road network are challenging, making Mékambo one of the most difficult to reach yet ecologically valuable locations in the country.
