Ivindo River (Gabon)

Weather…

The Ivindo River is the most significant tributary of the Ogooué in northeastern Gabon, celebrated for its pristine wilderness and dramatic waterfalls. It flows through the Ivindo National Park, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2021. The river is home to the Kongou Falls, often described as one of Africa's most beautiful and massive cataract systems, spanning over three kilometers in width. As a 'blackwater' river, the Ivindo's dark tint is caused by dissolved tannins from the surrounding dense rainforest vegetation. Its basin provides a critical sanctuary for forest elephants, lowland gorillas, and chimpanzees. Because of its remote location and numerous rapids, the river has remained largely undisturbed by human settlement, preserving an ancient ecosystem. It is also of great scientific interest due to its high degree of fish endemism and its role as a key habitat for the African grey parrot.
