The Phare de l'Enfant Perdu is a solitary lighthouse perched on a tiny rocky islet approximately 11 kilometers off the coast of Cayenne. Established in 1863, its primary mission was to facilitate the safe entry of vessels into the port of Cayenne and to provide warning of the treacherous surrounding reefs. The lighthouse's evocative name, 'The Lost Child,' reflects the extreme isolation of its rocky foundation amidst the Atlantic currents. Originally constructed from masonry, it required a permanent staff of lighthouse keepers who lived under conditions of profound solitude and environmental peril. In 1905, the lighting apparatus was modernized, and the station was eventually fully automated, negating the need for continuous human presence. The current structure is a reinforced concrete tower engineered to withstand heavy surf and the corrosive tropical maritime environment. The lighthouse continues to be an essential navigational aid for maritime traffic in French Guiana and stands as a distant landmark for those approaching the coast. Due to its remote offshore location, it is primarily viewed from afar or by boat.
